Installing WordPress on 1and1.com - Part One

Selecting a Host

Installing WordPress using the one click process offered by hosts such as BlueHost by way of cPanel or their own control panel featuring Fantastico is an easy process. Some of the lower cost, but yet high quality hosts do not offer the "one-click" installation procedure, so must be installed manually.

This may seem like a daunting task, but it much easier to do than to explain. We are going to explain the process from domain purchase to creating a working WordPress website. I am writing this using 1and1.com because it is the host I use for this and several of my other websites. The process is similar for manual installation on other hosts. If you do not have an existing domain, I suggest you get a hosting account with 1and1, and then take advantage of the 2 free domain registrations included in the package.  The hosting package selected should be on Linux servers, and may be ordered by clicking the banner ad below.here.

After clicking the 1and1 banner, you will be taken to a page where you select the service you want. On the page which looks like the image above, select "Web Hosting"

You will then get to a page which give you some of the highlights of 1an1 hosting and asks you to select a plan. See image above.

After clicking "Choose a Package", the page illustrated above presents several options from which to select.  Be sure that "Linux Hosting" appears on the tab at the top of the information window.  I suggest selecting the "1&1 Home" plan in the second column.  It offers much more storage and bandwidth than the plan in the first column, and allows the domain registration of two domains instead of 1. Click "Sign Up" under the desired plan. You will be directed to two or three additional pages where you can select some other features.  Since we are planning on using WordPress on this site, just ignore the options and click continue until you get to the payment page.  Upon payment you will be given a UserID and you will be able to select a password.

The next installment will show you how to select a new domain, or transfer an existing domain name to your 1and1 account to take advantage of their free registration under the selected plan.

Thought I should advise. I signed up for the home package as sggested above. It does not support data bases and does not have a 'My SQL' option. Support from 1and1 say I have to up grade to Business.

Hi Paul

Something is wrong here. I just went to the 1and1 website and found the following for their linux hosting packages:

The 1and1 Home package has 25 included MySQL databases. For reference go to http://tiny.cc/blogger37 then click the arrow to expand the additional Core Features.

If you need help installing WordPress, the offer is still good. Thank you for visiting the site.

The 25 MySQL DB thing comes with the 1&1.com package (Stateside, not the Soviet Union of Europe).

WOW man, you opened my eyes here. I have the .co.uk Business package deal and it really SUCKS compared to this (2 poxy MySQLs, and *double the price* for everything). Can't speak for the connectivity or customer service, but it looks like a timely transfer could save many pennies.

Games afoot, Watson. Call me a Hansom…

Jeff
